Stone Hammers

These stone hammers were for pounding dried chokecherries and jerky into a powder, to which is added suet for making pemmican.  The beaded and quilled pounders were likely embellished to be given away. The large mauls/hammers below were used to pound tipi stakes, drive wedges to split wood, break bones for extracting marrow or smash skulls to remove brains for tanning.
