Spotted Tail

Spotted Tail was chief of the Brule Sioux, whose people now live on the Rosebud reservation.  He took part in the Gratten Massare, but later sought peace knowing it was best to save his people though peace.  He was an uncle to Crazy Horse.

He was born in 1823 and died of a gunshot in 1881 by Crow Dog, supposedly in a dispute over horses or a wife he took.  His Lakota name is Sinte Gleska and a university on the Rosebud is named for him.

This pipe bowl shown belonged to him.  After he was killed, his wife took a piece of his bloody muslin shirt and plugged the bowl so it could not be used again.
